Frequently asked tattoo removal questions
How painful is laser tattoo removal?
Generally laser tattoo removal is no more painful than having the tattoo in the first place.
How long does it take to remove a tattoo?
Every tattoo is unique, so the number of treatments depends on the size of the tattoo, the quality of the inks used and the depth of the ink in the skin. Most tattoos take between 4 to 10 treatments per area, but some require more. Each treatment needs to be spaced 6-8 weeks apart to allow the skin to heal. However, if the tattoo is over a large area we can treat a different area 2 weeks later.
Can you guarantee to remove my tattoo?
Nobody can make such a guarantee, because so much depends on the quality of the inks used by the tattooist.
Can you treat all ink colours?
No, we can only remove black, blue and red colours and a combination of these such as purple.
What can I expect after each treatment?
After treatment you will usually experience slight swelling and blistering on the treated tattoo that will heal in about 5 to 10 days. The skin may stay pink or red for a slightly longer period of time after it heals. Written aftercare advice will be given to you and fully explained.
What complications can occur?
Although rare, loss of skin colouring (hypopigmentation) can happen. As the laser targets black pigment we cannot remove tattoos on dark coloured and sunburnt skin as this will cause hypopigmentation. Other complications rarely arise but these will be discussed along with your medical history during your confidential consultation. If your skin has been recently tanned we will advise when the tattoo removal process can begin.
